Mar 12, 2020 - Over the last forty-eight hours we have seen a rapid evolution of the situation in Kentucky and the rest of the United States involving COVID-19, known more generally as the Coronavirus.
During these last two days we have seen multiple professional sports leagues cancel their seasons, the NCAA cancel all upcoming college tournaments, and Governor Holcomb in Indiana limiting all public gatherings to a maximum of 250 people for the foreseeable future.
In Kentucky, Governor Beshear has declared a State of Emergency and is recommending closures of schools, among other preventative measures. In Louisville, Mayor Fischer has cancelled all upcoming Metro events, and the Louisville Metro Council is moving to fund emergency housing and food supplies in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
In light of these unprecedented measures being taken, Teamsters Local 89 has made the decision to cancel our Spring General Membership Meeting that was set to take place on Friday, March 13th. Although our General Membership Meetings are an important and integral part of our Union, our members health and safety are more so, and we would prefer to err on the side of caution in this uncertain atmosphere.
In addition, Teamsters Local 89 is in the process of reaching out to the various companies we represent to determine what steps each employer is taking in regard to COVID-19 so that we may share that information with the affected members when it is available.
We would encourage any member seeking general information and/or advice about COVID-19 to visit the International Brotherhood of Teamsters COVID-19 page and read the information flier linked there, which is being updated as the situation develops. You can find the page here: https://teamster.org/…/teamsters-safety-health-coronavirus-…
Lastly, we would encourage all members and their families to utilize the benefits afforded to you by your union contract to its fullest. If you are feeling ill or are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, please see a doctor immediately.
Stay educated, aware, and above all else, stay safe and healthy.
