  • COVID-19: UPS Worldport Update
    Updated On: Apr 09, 2020

If you believe ANY of the following procedures are not being followed in your work area, please contact your UPS Air Business Agent immediately.

In order to protect our union members during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have communicated ALL employee concerns brought to our attention to the Company. The Company had already put measures in place for the safety of our employees and in addition addressed the concerns that were brought up by Local 89 members.

The most serious concern voiced by our members is what will happen if someone tests positive for the virus:

If there is a POSITIVE case, the company will notify the employees in that building that someone tested positive. Public health officials along with UPS occupational health will determine if employees need to self-quarantine. The work area of infected employees will be sanitized by an outside vendor per CDC guidelines.

Infected employees and employees who are directed to quarantine by UPS, CDC or their doctor are eligible for EMERGENCY PAID LEAVE that was negotiated between the Union and the Company.

If there is a SUSPECTED case, meaning someone has symptoms and is referred to testing, the Company will bring in an outside vendor to clean the area. This is not CDC required but a preventative measure taken by the Company, to ensure a safe work environment.

The uUnion and Company agree that healthcare privacy laws must be followed, however there is no intent to hide positive or suspected cases from work areas.

Here are additional steps the Union and Company have worked together on to ensure the safety of employees:

    • 30 additional shuttles were added to the fleet to ensure employees can social distance while riding to and from their work areas.
    • Health and safety management are stationed at several shuttle stops to monitor the number of employees on shuttles.
    • Shuttles are sanitized prior and after each sort and whenever they are idle.
    • Walk path maps were distributed to employees and we encourage them to use that option.
    • Guard shack cleaning has doubled and hand sanitizer is available when entering and exiting the airpark.
    • Break areas and bathrooms are cleaned before, during and after each sort. This includes wiping down vending machines, countertops, tabletops and ensuring bathrooms have soap and paper towels.
    • UPS has provided CDC recommended bleach solution to all hub and ramp areas (including individual crew vans) to use as needed.
    • UPS has provided hand sanitizer to all ramp crews.
    • Small Sort elevators will be monitored to limit the number of employees on the elevators at one time. We encourage as many employees as possible to take the stairs to allow for social distancing.
    • Handrails in stairwells to small sort will be sanitized regularly.
    • The health department has responded on three different occasions to complaints filed by employees. They have confirmed all three times that UPS is taking appropriate measures and protocols to ensure the safety of their workforce.
    • UPS acquired masks and distributed to all employees. (Currently there are limited supplies due to the need for medical professionals to have Personal Protective Equipment)

Partnership is needed now more than ever. Keep yourself and your fellow employees safe by following CDC recommendations on hand washing and follow social distancing guidelines. Local 89 and UPS are committed to keeping our union members safe during this crisis.

UPS remains running and has chartered 25 planes in a partnership with FEMA and US healthcare distributors. These planes will deliver 3 million pounds of masks, surgical gowns, gloves, swabs and thermometers to hospitals across the country and in doing so, we are SAVING LIVES.

As always, THANK YOU for playing such a critical role in this life saving effort, representing Local 89 and UPS as a LOCAL HERO!
