  • Local 89 UPS Stewards Unanimously Recommend NO
    Updated On: Aug 22, 2018

    Aug 13, 2018 -

Louisville, KY – Over 70 Rank-and-File UPS and UPS Freight Stewards attended a meeting at Teamsters Local 89 today to review the National Master Agreement, Central Region Supplement, Louisville Air Rider, and the UPS Freight National Master Agreement. All four of these agreements received unanimous NO recommendations from the Stewards gathered.

“Our Stewards were clear that they believe our members deserve better,” said President Fred Zuckerman. “Local 89 stands by them in their recommendations for a no vote.”

Of particular importance was the Louisville Air Rider agreement. This Tentative Agreement had previously received a yes recommendation from Teamsters Local 89, but that changed late last week.

One of the crowning achievements in the Air Rider was an agreement to provide Short-Term Disability pay of 60% to Full-Time workers in the Louisville Air District (Worldport). At the UPS Joint Area Committee meeting last week, Local 89 Business Agents were informed by the Company that UPS was no longer going to honor that agreement, and that instead they planned to put a cap of $500 dollars on the amount a Full-Time worker could receive while on Short-Term Disability.

During negotiations, Local 89’s committee was very clear that we wanted the Short-Term Disability to be 60%, and at no time did our committee ever speak with the Company about any sort of cap. When challenged on this, the Company has admitted that there was never any mention of a cap of any sort during the negotiations.

“Local 89 stands by any agreement we make, and we expect UPS to do the same,” said Zuckerman. “If the Company is going to back out of this agreement, then we are going to vote the Air Rider down.”

Teamsters Local 89’s position on the National Master Agreement, the Central Region Supplement, and UPS Freight National Master Agreement have been covered previously. These agreements are, at best, not good enough for our members, and at worst, highly concessionary.
