HB 404 UPS "Golf Cart" Bill Passes KY House
Mar 02, 2017
President Zuckerman testifies against HB 404 before the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety committee.

Mar 01, 2017

Despite strong opposition from Teamsters 89 and many friends to working people in the House, HB 404, the UPS "Golf Cart Bill", passed on the Kentucky State House floor earlier today with a vote of 61 for and 36 against. The debate over this bill lasted for nearly two hours as many Representative's stood up and spoke against this un-safe legislation. Many of these same Representative's had previously filed 11 amendments to HB 404 which, if adopted, would have dramatically reduced the safety risks of Golf Cart delivery. Sadly, House leadership used parliamentary procedures to send the bill back through a second committee before having it voted on the floor, thereby stripping all existing amendments from it, and then voted against a suspension of rules to allow amendment's to still be considered.

We thank every State Representative who stood up and spoke out against this legislation, they proved themselves to be true friends of working people and their unions. They gave very powerful and impassioned statements against this bill. This includes Representative's Jeff Donahue, Jim Wayne, Joni Jenkins, Mckenzie Cantrell, Rocky Adkins, Will Coursey, Mary-Lou Marzian, Rick Nelson, Attica Scott, Jeff Greer, Sanie Overly, Chris Harris, Dennis Keene, and many others.

We would like to note that Representative Steve Riggs, who had co-sponsored this bill, chose to abstain from the vote. We thank every member who called him to voice their opposition to HB 404.

HB 404 will now move to a Senate committee, likely tomorrow, and we will continue to fight against it there.
